Stupid Draw

Post by John Pits »

Anyone else find it ridiculous that all these 'A' teams had byes, which leaves them free to play all their players at lower teams and beat teams that they shouldn't?

For example, Pembroke A's had a bye. They drop players to their other teams.

Grads Red A, play Pembroke C team. Pembroke win 1-0.
Grads White 3rd div team, play Pembroke 4th div team and lose 7-0 (after they beat Pembroke Cs a couple weeks ago)

There is no way of stopping them doing this, as players are free to get bumped up a team, they just can't move down.

Why not play a preliminary round or something of the like before the season starts, so that there are no byes and everyone is forced to play for their respective team?

We had a similar issue with a C tream turning up bolstered by players from a higher team (in this case B's) with their A grade supplementing their B team.....
Having said that we played awful but its wasn't the point..... Maybe have all palyers cup tied to the team they play for would help as the current rules only cup tie players from playing down.........
Having said that, the status quo will be resumed in round 2 but it isn't fair or equitable from the teams who get the byes (who are usually the stronger clubs already!!)
At least we now have a week off........

We should really get a gentleman's agreement from Clubs not to drop players down in that way. Given its only the succesful clubs that get the bye, you would think its not such a hard thing for them to do.

Bit hard for someone who genuinely played in the B's in round one say not to be allowed to play for the A's in later rounds when they become in that team's best 15. I don't thnk tying players to a particular team within a club will work for that reason.

Wow, that's disappointing that the clubs do it, but they've always done it... I know similar things happened last season when the blacks C's pulled out - the big clubs with the bye pushed their players down a div to ensure a win.
In saying that, i can't see a way around it.. Although that 'preliminary round' idea isn't bad (but would probably have to be done pre-season).

John I couldn't agree with you more.
This has been happening for a number of years now It is really disappointing. Effectively the top clubs end up having more teams in there after round one.
Surely the CSL have got to think about this in the future, and maybe have a 3up rule or something where only 3 players competing in a B team, can play for an A team the next round. That is just an example, but feel there would be many ways around it. Its absolute rubbish that Pembroke and other clubs are doing that, however they are doing it within the 'rules'.

Its down to the league. After our A team were knocked out by Sacred Hearts C team, our C team played them a few weeks after and it was a different team entirely (bar a few). Maybe next year we load the B and C teams to make sure we get our A players through??!! Only joking but thats how silly the rules are although its no use crying over spilt milk...

There is a way for some of you who are complaining to beat the system, just win you all your games so you move to div 1 AND then you might get a bye. Maybe it's a just reward for working and playing harder. Sounds more like sour grapes to me and it not only happens in CSL, it happens all the way up to Super League in Federation.

hahah! gold, think you're missing the point though.
Although i did hear a suggedtion from a team from Div 4 - rather than giving the top 4 teams a bye - the bottom 8 teams play off for 4 spots into 'Round 1' of the cup. Then all the clubs play their players in the approriate teams. Suggested do this in the last game of pre-season or the day of the CSL Cup.

Yak, superb idea. Much like CSL sides in the Fed Cup, the bottom few sides play off to provide an overall number of sides that can all play in round 1 proper.

A preliminary round if you will...

No sour grapes..... You have definitley missed the point....
Therefore We can assume you are one of those clubs that are happy to fuel this issue!!
Also, Some of the better teams (as mentioned on other threads) DONT WANT to play in Div 1 although some of them wouldn't load teams for various reasons (they don't have second teams!!). Everyone pays thier fees to play so why should some players miss out on the cup round because thew A team want a game?? Its all about fairness and equity NOT the rules.....
Plus..it doesn't matter what league it happens in, its still not good and it can be sorted painlessley.
Like the suggestion Yak and it should be put to the Collegiate Commitee!
Root cause is that no one wants to miss a weekend and this is especially the case in the higher placed teams.... Have the play off at the bottom end and problem sorted..
