Cup Round 2

Post by yak »

Just had a quick look through the Cup draw... Quite a few encounters that look lopsided on paper. Some of the obvious mis-matches are:
Pembroke A v CBC B
Windsor Gdns (last years Cup winners) v Rostrevor C
Rostrevor A v Uni White C
Pultney A v Unley Sky
In all likelyhood all these results will be lopsided affairs, with the higher div teams having shooting practice against their lowly opponents, but one of the great things about the cup is there's always an upset or 2!
These aer the games that the lower div teams just occasionally claim a top div scalp! Here's hoping there's a couple of upsets!

Was also looking for a 'match of the round' ... slim pickings... Perhaps these 2 (even if it's a 1A v 2A game)
PAOC A v Sacred Heart A
North City A v Uni White A

Good calls.. Its not a round that would worry any bookmaker that's for sure with some big scores guaranteed!
The only possible shocks (if you like long odds) are:

Uni SA 2B v Uni Black 1A -
Scotch 1a v Mt Barker 2B

Both the Div 1a teams are short on form and confidence against 2 of the better Div2B teams...nothing to lose and everything to lose!!
The first round saw a number of clubs 'rotate' players into different squads which will lead to some B teams having A grade players...... Whereas the Div1 sides will be as expected. This can only narrow the gap!

Some of the other teams that 'loaded' their C squads in the first round will be found wanting big time but that's the gamble

The 3rd round will almost certainly belong to the seeded teams but here's hoping for at least one shock to keep it interesting.

That's a big upset. Are Scotch on the way down or did they play an understrength side??

Don't know... They looked OK for parts of the first half but were beaten by a very young team, some old fashioned counter attacking football and some full blooded defending....
It will be a long season for them in Div1 if they play like that each week but maybe they had some players out??
Maybe its just the greet leveller that cup football is!

Where's pencil head?
Got to laugh when karma comes and hits u in the face. I'd say see you in div 2 next year but I'm not sure Norwood will be there.

What about these results? Not Div 1, but still big upsets!
CBC A 0 - 3 Grads Red B
Pembroke B 3 - 3 Unley Navy 4 (pens 1-4)
Unley C 2 - 1 Mercedes B

And... how many players did Uni Blacks B's have?????
That's it!

new cup format required in 2012. Waste of time for many teams with some of these match ups. As the league has grown so much in the last few years you cant have all teams involved. There are 22 clubs in the league through out all divisions. Each club to enter 1 team. Everyone in the club can play for that side. No more worrying about players beig cup tied etc.

Rd 1 - Div 1 - All clubs have a bye ( 10 Teams ) - Div 2 clubs (10 Teams + Simba + Windsor) = 12 play rd 1.
Rd 2 - Div 1 + 6 winners = 16 teams play on through the cup.

After rd 1 cup could be drawn fully so teams know exactly who they will play next Rd and who is in their way to the final.

There are many advantages for this so hopefully next year we can make these changes and stop wasting many peoples time and clubs money.

Some may agree with me but i am also sure there will be many that will say everyone should have a go. As long as each club is represented then thats all that should happen.
